The
Amish are primarily farmers, however, some are carpenters
and cabinet makers. The cabinetries that you find in the
homes at The Preserve are designed in the Shaker or Mission
style which reflect the theme of Amish life; simplicity,
utility, grace and devotion.
Cabinetry construction is done at their home wood shop
in La Plata, Missouri. Hand tools such as hand planes
and chisels along with true artistry and craftsmanship
are used to create each unique piece. Intricate joinery
detailing can be seen throughout the cabinetry where traditional
dovetailing and mortise and tenon joints enhance the beauty
and strength of the wood.
All of the cabinetry is made from solid premium grade
hard maple, cherry and hickory with a variety of finishes
to choose from.
The Amish live “simply” as part of their faith
and their religious practices vary between sects. Amish
families live without electricity, automobiles, telephones
and many other modern-day conveniences that we embrace.
Many of their conveniences were used in America’s
19th Century or earlier – where wood, coal, propane
and kerosene fuel stoves and provide heat and light.
You will not find pictures
of the Amish people because they believe that photographs violate the biblical
teaching against making graven images (Exodus 20:4). They also feel that pictures
will promote self-pride and may put their hands or hats over their faces, look
away or take some action to avoid having their picture taken.
